Generation Green - The Newland Communities Commitment to Sustainability
Committed to making Houston a better place to live, Newland Communities has launched Generation Green, an environmental initiative that reflects different aspects of each of our three Cornerstones: Home, Healthy Living Systems and Innovation.
At Summerwood, Newland Communities was awarded the Silver Medal from the Texas Council of Engineering Companies for its ongoing efforts to restore and preserve 150 acres of wetlands, enhancing open spaces that provide inspiring views as well as habitat for native species.
Organic Fertilizer
Newland Communities is committed to using organic fertilizer for hundreds of acres of landscaped right-of-way and common areas in our Houston communities. Compared to chemical-based fertilizer, organic fertilizer is natural and safe for plants and soils, and doesn’t create runoff that contaminates area waterways.
Hazardous Waste Recycling Programs
Some of the most common household items, such as paint cans, batteries and old electronic components, are not appropriate for landfills, but are not collected along with more common recyclables such as plastic and paper. To help the 10,000 families currently living in active Newland Communities in the Houston area recycle responsibly, we are committed to educating and providing regular hazardous waste recycling programs to the fullest extent of our ability.
Storm Sewer Indentification Stickers
Few people recognize storm sewers, much less realize the significance of what happens when anything other than rainwater goes into them. Bottom line – any liquid or solid substance inserted into a storm sewer flows untreated into area waterways, and ultimately makes its way to the ocean. To educate residents and help prevent storm sewer pollution, Newland Communities has adopted a program of placing educational labels on such sewers in all of its Houston area communities.
Celebration Arbor Day
To help residents of all ages learn about the important benefits of planting and protecting trees, Newland Communities plans annual Arbor Day celebrations in each of its Houston communities. In addition to education, the trees distributed and planted during these events make a significant contribution to our year-round tree-planting and reforestation efforts in all of our communities.
Tip of the Month
Wash your car with care
Washing your car in your driveway, or allowing your car to leak, sends chemicals into the storm sewer, which has the same result as dumping the chemicals directly into an area stream. To help protect the environment, keep your vehicle in good condition, and wash your car on the lawn, or take it to a car wash that treats or recycles its wastewater.
